Welcome to the first topic or first lesson of the Online Wikipedia Training, offered by Wikimedia Ghana User Group – Ghana’s community of Wikipedia editors. This training Wikipedia 101e to introduce you to Wikipedia.
My name is Sandister Tei; your instructor for this first lesson; a Wikipedian myself, and I have been recruiting and training editors since 2012.
Now, what is Wikipedia? It is an encyclopedia website. An encyclopedia is a book or set of books giving information on many topics.
Wikipedia is a special kind of website. This website, unlike other sites, allows you to add, remove and edit the encyclopedic content found on its webpages.
Think of the website bbc.com. Think of your friend’s Facebook page. You are not able to edit the information they post. The most you can do is to comment, like, share and suggest for them to change something. You can’t go to the backend to do it for them.
But on Wikipedia, you can edit what someone else has published because Wikipedia is a wiki. Oxford Dictionary website describes a wiki as a website developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing any user to add and edit content.
Does this mean every reference to the word wiki you see online is related to Wikipedia? Not at all. WikiLeaks, for example, has nothing to do with Wikipedia.
Now whenever you think of Wikipedia, think of website developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing any user to add and edit encyclopedic content.
Please note that Wikimedia Foundation owns Wikipedia. That said, Wikipedia is their product. Wikipedia is not an organization. It is the product.
You cannot be a member or staff of Wikipedia, but you can be an editor and someone who also teaches others to edit like me.
There are no commercial adverts on Wikipedia like other websites. Wikimedia Foundation relies on donations to keep Wikipedia running. Part of that donation is the time you give for free to improve Ghanaian content on there. Think of that as your donation. And because we all improve Wikipedia for free, Wikipedia can also stay free for use, when you and others need it.
Wikipedia is available in over 300 languages, including English, Twi and Ewe.
Now that you know what Wikipedia is, start considering ways you can help improve Ghanaian content on it.
