FAQs

What is Wikipedia?

Wikipedia is a free, online encyclopedia that anyone can read and edit, created collaboratively by volunteers around the world to provide neutral, verifiable information on almost any topic. People use it to quickly look up background information on subjects like historical events, scientific concepts, public figures, and cultures; students use it for initial research and to find sources; journalists and professionals use it to check facts or timelines; and communities use it to document local history, languages, and knowledge that may not be well represented elsewhere.

How can I contribute to Wikipedia

You can contribute to Wikipedia by creating a free account and improving articles through editing for clarity, adding well-sourced information, fixing errors, or translating content into other languages; you can also create new articles on notable topics, add reliable references, upload freely licensed images to Wikimedia Commons, and help document underrepresented histories and knowledge by following Wikipedia’s guidelines on neutrality, verifiability, and reliable sourcing.

Which other ways can contribute?

Beyond Wikipedia, you can contribute to other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons (free images, audio, and video), Wikidata (structured data that powers knowledge across platforms), Wikisource (free, original texts like books and historical documents), Wikibooks (open textbooks and learning resources), Wikiversity (learning materials and research), Wikivoyage (travel guides), Wikiquote (sourced quotations), Wiktionary (dictionaries and language resources), and Wikinews (collaborative journalism).

Where can I get more help or training?

We host sessions and workshops weekly and monthly, in-person and online, in Ghana. Email us community@wmgh.org, and we will be happy to connect you to one.

Do I get paid editing Wikipedia?

No, you generally do not get paid for editing Wikipedia; most contributors are volunteers who edit to share knowledge and support free access to information. However, some people are paid outside of Wikipedia (for example by institutions, nonprofits, or employers) to edit, research, or manage Wikimedia-related projects, but these editors must follow strict rules, disclose their paid status, and avoid conflicts of interest.
