The Wikimedia Ghana User Group is seeking an intern for its communications and programs.

Internship summary

Wikimedia Ghana User Group (WMGH) is one of the 192 affiliates of the Wikimedia Movement. WMGH is a geographically-based affiliate. As the geographically-focused affiliate our mandate is to support and promote Wikimedia projects in Ghana.

A world in which every Ghanaian has access to and can also contribute freely to the sum of all knowledge.

To empower and engage people around Ghana to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally.

The Wikimedia Movement is the global community that supports the Wikimedia projects including the flagship platform Wikipedia. This community includes:

  • Contributors to wiki projects like Wikipedia.
  • Wikimedia Foundation which was created in 2003 to fund the development and upkeep of the wikis and support the contributors.
  • Organisations including global

Knowledge as a service: The Wikimedia movement serves open knowledge to the world across interfaces and communities. We are working towards building tools for allies and partners to organize and exchange free knowledge beyond Wikimedia. Our infrastructure will enable us and others to collect and use different forms of free, trusted knowledge.

Knowledge equity: As a social movement, we will focus our efforts on the knowledge and communities that have been left out by structures of power and privilege. We will welcome people from every background to build strong and diverse communities. We will break down the social, political, and technical barriers preventing people from accessing and contributing to free knowledge.

We are looking for you if:

  • You are willing to embrace a strong and up-to-date understanding of the Free Knowledge ecosystem and the Wikimedia Movement.
  • You are interested in both program coordination and communications within a nonprofit or community-based environment. 
  • You are able to communicate in English both verbally and written, fluently and with clarity.
  • You have digital fluency; you have comfort navigating devices, platforms, apps, and online tools, and the ability to learn new ones quickly. This means you are already comfortable with the basics of:
    • Using Canva to create social media and communications materials. 
    • Using Trello, Asana, or Notion for task and project management. 
    • Creating decks in Google Slides.
    • Using Google Calendar to organise individual and group work.
    • Using Gmail for email correspondence.
    • Using Google Drive: Docs, Sheets, Forms and Photos for collaborative documentation.
  • You are punctual.
  • You can create written content for reports, social media, newsletters, and announcements.
  • Awareness of global issues, including SDGs and human rights.
  • Conducting research and analysis to inform content creation.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proven leadership and collaboration abilities, including team coordination and cross-cultural communication in multilingual settings.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Intern shall perform a support role, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Support the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of Wikimedia-related programs; editathons, regional workshops, contests, and annual events by collaborating with a team of regional Wikimedia Specialists, community volunteers and other Wikimedia affiliates who execute these programs.
  • Support fundraising work to secure between USD 75,000 – 550,000 annually through the Wikimedia Community General Support Fund, applying established internal movement grant processes.
  • Support communications and visibility efforts for programs and organisational activities across digital platforms. 
  • Assist with drafting and publishing social media content, newsletters, blog posts, and announcements. 
  • Support work to create and submit annual project proposals, budgets, mid-term and final grant reports, as well as detailed activity work plans by working in collaboration with our in-house Administrative Officer or other designated person.

Compensation

The Intern shall be compensated at the rate of ¢2000 per month. Payments will be made on a monthly basis.

Working Hours

  • The Intern is expected to work standard working hours, 40 hours per week from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and 11:30 AM to 7:30 PM (variable shifts), Monday through Friday, including
    • Attending 2 virtual events weekly from 7:00-8:00 PM UTC.
  • May require occasional weekend availability, depending on our regional program schedules.
