Good governance and a happier, and more resilient community

Wikimedia Ghana User Group has nearly 300 members.

The Wikimedia Ghana User Group maintains a membership register covering 2016–2026. Membership is open to individuals who express an interest in joining the user group, with many members first engaging through our regional beginner workshops and other community activities.

We have community development activities as follows:

01. Wikipedia Anniversary Jollof Party

The Wikipedia Anniversary Jollof Party is Wikimedia Ghana User Group’s annual community engagement activity, held to celebrate Wikipedia’s anniversary while strengthening volunteer motivation, retention, and connections across Regional Nodes.

The 2026 celebration reinforced community belonging by creating opportunities for contributors to reconnect, share experiences, and celebrate their collective contributions to the Wikimedia Movement. Held across eight Regional Nodes in Ashanti, Central, Eastern, Greater Accra, Northern, Upper East, Western, and Western North, the decentralized celebration enabled volunteers from different parts of Ghana to participate in a shared movement milestone while strengthening regional communities and reinforcing the Nodes as active structures for sustained community participation and collaboration.

The activity also fostered knowledge exchange between experienced contributors and newer editors, creating mentorship opportunities that encouraged continued participation within the movement. Participants were recognised for their contributions with Wikipedia25 commemorative T-shirts and tote bags, providing a tangible expression of appreciation and reinforcing their sense of belonging to the Wikimedia community.

02. Ghanaian Wikimedian Awards

The Ghanaian Wikimedia Community Awards 2025 was a community recognition initiative designed to address the challenge of sustaining contributor motivation and long-term participation within Ghana’s Wikimedia movement. By celebrating outstanding contributors and communities, the awards sought to make contributions more visible and valued, highlight impactful work across the movement, and bolster motivation for continued participation within the Ghanaian Wikimedia community. 

The awards were implemented through a community-led and transparent process involving open nominations, eligibility validation, community voting, and a virtual awards ceremony. The ceremony attracted approximately 30–38 participants and included dedicated networking activities, such as a virtual red carpet and networking session, which created additional opportunities for community members to interact beyond the formal award presentations.

By making outstanding contributions visible and celebrating the people behind them, the initiative addressed a persistent challenge in volunteer-driven movements, which is sustaining motivation and engagement over the long term without financial incentives.

03. Shared Community Resources

The Shared Community Resources Program is an initiative launched in 2024/2025 to support Wikimedia organisers by providing free event spaces for emerging Wikimedia groups that may have limited access to funding. The initiative aims to help reduce the financial and logistical burden of securing venues for community activities.

During this grant year, we expanded the program by providing additional support, including lunch, snacks, logistics, and graphic design assistance. We supported the Ghanaian Pidgin Wikimedians Community in organising two Africa Wiki Challenge 2026 events. By providing free event space, internet access, graphic design support, and meals, Wikimedia Ghana User Group contributed to reducing the financial and logistical constraints that could otherwise have limited the community’s ability to organise and deliver its activities. 

This enabled the organisers to focus on content creation and improvement while building the community’s capacity to organise activities and contribute to the growth of Ghanaian Pidgin Wikipedia. The initiative showed that by sharing resources, communities with limited means can organize activities more effectively and contribute more to the growth of Wikimedia projects.

04. Annual General Meeting

As part of our commitment to transparent governance and community accountability, Wikimedia Ghana User Group held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) online on 20 December 2026. The AGM also formed part of the organisation’s statutory governance obligations as a registered nonprofit organisation in Ghana. Although the meeting was non-voting because the current Board remains within its two-year mandate, it provided an important opportunity to report on organisational progress, share strategic priorities, and engage community members in discussions about the future of the user group.

The Board highlighted the organisation’s continued compliance with its governance obligations, including annual audits since its registration in 2021, while providing updates on the implementation of the Wikimedia Foundation General Support Fund and the Knowledge Equity Fund Connected Grant. Community members also received updates on ongoing programmes, regional activities, and partnerships that have contributed to advancing free knowledge across Ghana.

The Board also outlined key strategic priorities for the coming years, including the development of a new three-year strategic plan, diversifying funding sources beyond Wikimedia Foundation grants, and strengthening regional leadership through additional capacity building for Regional Node Leads. Members were also encouraged to actively participate in discussions shaping the Pan-African Hub Framework while updates on the West African Hub, which remains in its planning phase and has a Wikimedia Ghana User Group board member serving as one of its leads, were shared. These structures were recognised as playing an important role in strengthening collaboration and support for Wikimedia communities across the continent.

The AGM also served as an important forum for community engagement. It provided an opportunity to announce the second Ghanaian Wikimedia Community Awards and shared plans for the regional celebrations of Wikipedia’s 25th anniversary. Members also shared feedback on contributor support, regional capacity building, contributor recognition programmes, and opportunities to strengthen diversity and inclusion within community initiatives. These discussions informed follow-up actions, including exploring additional training opportunities for Regional Node Leads, reviewing community award categories, and continuing improvements to community engagement processes.

The AGM reinforced Wikimedia Ghana User Group’s commitment to transparent governance, responsive leadership, and building a resilient, community-driven movement capable of advancing free knowledge throughout Ghana.

05. Support for Volunteer Support Network

We are acting as fiscal sponsors for Volunteer Support Network to support the recruitment of a local Wikimedian to lead the South Saharan Africa Node. This ongoing role contributes to strengthening regional leadership and capacity by enabling locally based coordination, community engagement, and collaboration across the region. Through this support, we are contributing to the development of regional structures that can strengthen the growth and sustainability of Wikimedia communities across South Saharan Africa.
