Our work will be organised around four core programs, each addressing key challenges affecting participation, content creation, equity and community development.

1. Increasing and Sustaining Participation and Content Creation

This program focuses on welcoming new contributors, retaining existing editors, and expanding Ghanaian content across Wikimedia projects.

Key activities include:

  • Regional Node Wikipedia 101 Workshops to recruit and train new contributors across Ghana.
  • Wikipedia Current Affairs Club to provide regular opportunities for editors to contribute to current and emerging topics in Ghana.
  • Women-focused Online Editathons to support increased participation and improve content about women.
  • Mobile-Friendly Wikipedia Training to make editing more accessible to contributors who primarily use mobile devices.
  • Engaging Non-Contributors through social media content, editor stories, cheat sheets, tips and information about upcoming Wikimedia activities.
  • Highlife @ 100 Contest to document and improve knowledge about Ghana’s Highlife music heritage, alongside Wikidata for Ghanaian Music activities.

2. Equity

This program focuses on reducing barriers to participation and addressing gaps in the representation of women and communities with limited resources.

Key activities include:

  • Notable Ghanaian Women on Wikipedia Campaign in March 2027, including a nationwide contest focused on improving content about Ghanaian women.
  • Shared Community Resources, providing support such as event space and design resources to Wikimedia and open-source communities with limited resources.

3. Community Development

This program focuses on strengthening relationships within the Wikimedia community, recognising contributors and building stronger regional communities.

Key activities include:

  • Wikipedia Anniversary Jollof Party, bringing active editors together across Ghana to connect, celebrate and strengthen community bonds.
  • Ghanaian Wikimedia Community Awards, recognising outstanding contributors, projects and community achievements.
  • Building Node Capacities – Wikidata, equipping Node Leads with practical Wikidata skills and enabling them to share this knowledge within their regional communities.

Looking Ahead

Through these programs, WMGH will continue to decentralise implementation, strengthen regional communities, increase participation, improve Ghanaian content, and make Wikimedia opportunities more accessible and equitable across the country.

While these are the key activities planned for the 2026/2027 grant year, the plan may be adjusted as needed to respond to emerging opportunities, challenges, and the evolving needs of our community.
